Dear Jericho Families,

During the winter months, we may close certain playground structures for safety reasons.  Student safety requires us to limit use of some apparatus.  As the fall zone protection material either freezes or is covered with ice, use of some structures that places a student’s head over five feet above the ground may be closed.   The fall zone is defined as the area on the ground where a child would fall off an apparatus.   Most fall zone materials, either wood chips or pea stones, will not protect a child from a critical head injury above this height if the material is frozen or covered with ice.  Decisions on the use of equipment will be made on a daily basis.  The fall zone materials on our playground provides sufficient protection in the warmer weather and maintenance of these materials occurs on a regular basis.  This winter has provided school playgrounds in the district with many layers of ice and hard packed snow with no possible maintenance of materials.
The practice began this practice on Monday, March 24th. We are hopeful that the warm weather will be here soon and all our structures will be in regular use.
Please call the school at 899-2772  if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Victoria Graf
